How to Diagnose a Lifecycle 5000/9000
with an Unlit Display
1. Check battery. The battery should read 8 volts DC. If it has less than 7.5 VDC, the battery should be replaced.
2. Check the connection between the battery and the console.
Put the leads of a voltmeter on the + and – leads of the battery. Press the start button on the console. If the voltage of the battery drops below 7 VDC, the battery has a bad cell.
3. Check the function of the alternator control board. Use the voltmeter to check the DC voltage between the blue and black leads coming from the ACB to the console. The meter should read 8 VDC. Then, with the voltmeter, check the DC voltage between the black and orange leads coming from the ACB to the console. Start pedaling and press the “Start” button. Upon pressing the button, the voltmeter should read 8 VDC.
NOTE: If, in the preceding test, the measurements from the voltmeter don’t read as they’re supposed to, the alternator control board is faulty. If they do read correctly, the console is faulty.
